  Jesús Gómez-Zurita

Jesús obtained a PhD degree in Biology (Univ. Balearic Islands, 2000) and developed and consolidated his training after seven years of postdoctoral research in the United Kingdom, Spain and Germany, thanks to the support of the European Union Marie Curie Program, the German Alexander von Humboldt Foundation or the Spanish ‘Ramón y Cajal’ Program, before occupying a permanent position as Staff Scientist of the Spanish High Research Council (CSIC) in July 2007, and a current appointment at the Institute of Evolutionary Biology (IBE) in Barcelona (Spain). His main research activity uses molecular markers and phylogenetic methods to assess both the structure and the processes that generate and maintain biodiversity, generally focusing on megadiverse groups of beetles as study system. The current research lines in his IBE laboratory, “Herbivore Beetle Evolution Lab”, include the systematics of selected groups of Chrysomelidae, the analysis of origins and evolution of unisexual species, as well as the evolutionary consequences of relinquishing sexual reproduction, but also the use of molecular tools to delimit species and ecological interactions in the study of local and regional faunas, and the structure of insect-plant communities in threatened tropical forests. This project belongs to the latter research line, as well as a similar initiative in Vietnam. He is co-author of some 50 research articles in the fields of Zoology, Entomology, Ecology, Genetics and Heredity and Evolutionary Biology.
